Curriculum Intent
At Corby Old Village Primary School our curriculum is driven by the need to prepare our children for lifelong learning. We provide opportunities for children to develop as independent, confident and successful learners with high aspirations who know how to make a positive contribution to their community and the wider society. Reading is the central focus to our curriculum and we prioritise children’s reading skills, fluency, comprehension and enjoyment.
Our curriculum has been designed to take account of the legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum. It exposes our children to a vocabulary rich, ambitious and sequenced curriculum where children can build on their knowledge and skills and can make links between prior and future learning.
Our aim is to enrich every child’s school experience by creating an inclusive environment where they are encouraged to reach their full potential.
The curriculum is enhanced by our curriculum drivers, and through these we provide learning experiences which promotes; aspirations, language rich with a love of reading and making a positive contribution. Furthermore, our school values permeate through everything we do and there is a high focus on developing our children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding.
Curriculum Implementation
We provide a broad and balanced curriculum with a clear focus on subjects as discrete units to deliver the curriculum. Our curriculum map, and units of work in every subject, contain the knowledge that we have identified as essential in our school, taking cultural capital into account. These have been carefully crafted for each subject, identifying composite knowledge and skills and breaking them down in to component parts to ensure sequential, layered knowledge acquisition. The curriculum is sequenced and progressive so that children can systematically accumulate knowledge which becomes embedded in their long-term memory. This approach enables pupils to make meaningful connections in their learning.
